When you ask an AI for "a dragon", there's a hidden dial that decides how hard it obeys you. Turn it low and the AI wanders off doing its own thing. Turn it high and it obeys… until it obeys too hard and the picture gets fried. Let's find the sweet spot.
The picture below is the AI's answer. Slowly drag the guidance dial up. At 0 the AI ignores your prompt (you get a mushy off-topic blob 🍌). As you crank it up it snaps toward a real dragon — spikes, horns, fiery red. Watch the obey-o-meter climb.
Nothing here is looked up — the shape, spikiness and color are all computed live from the dial. Low guidance = loose & creative but off-prompt. High guidance = glued to the prompt.
There's a second kind of steering: the negative prompt — a list of stuff to push away from. Our blob keeps drifting yellow-and-curvy (banana-ish 🍌). Flip the chip below to add "no banana" and watch it shove harder toward dragon, even at the same dial setting.
Each round gives you a target band of obedience (the green zone) — and the picture must not be fried. Turn the boss dial so the white marker lands inside the green and artifacts stay low, then hit Lock it in. Nail it 3 times to win the badge!
boss guidance dial · keep the fried meter under the cap!
Open Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, or any image generator and you'll meet this exact dial. Here's the cheat-sheet the pros carry in their heads:
Loose & dreamy. The model takes big creative liberties and often ignores parts of your prompt. Great for "surprise me".
Obeys your prompt and still looks natural. This is the default in almost every tool for a reason.
Obeys too hard: over-saturated, crunchy, posterized "fried" look. Sometimes cool on purpose — usually a mistake.
Our obey-o-meter is our own math. This is CLIP — a real AI that actually looks at a picture and rates how well it matches words — running 100% on your device. Load it, set the dial up top, then hit Score it: CLIP will tell you how "dragon" vs "banana" your current picture really is. Does the real judge agree with our dial?
First load downloads CLIP from Hugging Face, then it's cached for offline use. On a 4GB laptop give it a minute. ☕
You found the hidden dial behind every AI-art tool: guidance scale. Low = loose & creative but off-prompt. High = obedient… until it fries. And negative prompts let you steer by saying what to avoid. The pros live around 7.
